Brentford is a town in west London, situated at the confluence of the River Brent and the Thames. The area is bordered by the nearby Chiswick, Gunnersbury, Ealing, Hanwell, Osterley, Isleworth, Twickenham, Kew and Strand-on-the-Green. The name of the town derives from the Anglo-Saxon Breguntford and means “ford over the River Brent.”
There are a number of important local landmarks among which are The Syon estate, Boston Manor House, Brentford monument, St. Paul’s Church, St. Faith’s Church and St. Lawrence’s Church. The area is home to the headquarters of many companies. The area is home to the London Museum of Water & Steam that houses the largest operating beam engine and the Musical Museum.
One of the key locations in the area is the Brentford Dock, built by Great Western and Brentford Railway Company which later became part of the Great Western Railway. The Dock is situated opposite to Kew Gardens and to the south of the Grand Junction Canal and the mouth of the River Brent. In the recent years the little-used warehouses and premises of Brentford Dock were remodelled into apartments, shops and town houses. The town has two railway stations and is served by the Boston Manor tube station on its border with Hanwell.
